The most popular cars in Australia so far this year

Whether it’s because of flexible finance deals or the lower fuel costs seen in recent times, Australians are buying a huge amount of new cars. Last year broke records in terms of new car sales, and this year could trump even that.

But in such a competitive market for car buyers, which is the best option? While the entire breadth of automotive brands is open to a novated lease customer, seeing what’s popular might help you make a decision.

Best selling cars of 2016 (so far)

The first-quarter results are in, and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has tallied the numbers; the best selling cars of the year so far are:

  • Hyundai i30 (4,198 sold in Q1)
  • Toyota Hilux (3,897)
  • Toyota Corolla (3,612)
  • Mazda 3 (3,145)
  • Ford Ranger (2,960)

These results show quite a change in sentiment. Most notably, Toyota’s dominance as the most popular automaker might be in jeopardy. The Japanese marque has been top of the pile with its Corolla model for some time in Australia, with it being the best-selling car of 2015.

However, in the first quarter of 2016, the Toyota Corolla had sold 586 fewer new models than Hyundai’s i30 hatchback. Toyota may not be too discouraged, considering the brand still featured in the top five on more occasions than any other manufacturer.

Also interesting is how the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger are faring so far this year. We’ve always loved a ute in Australia, and with these sturdy, functional behemoths featuring twice in a list of only five, that sentiment only seems to be growing.

The Mazda 3 was the second most popular car of 2015, and, now sits in fourth place. It has some making up to do, though as the benchmark for so many other affordable, reliable models, Mazda has every opportunity to accelerate up the rankings.

What are you looking for in a new car?
